The Baker's Bakery & Cafe

The Baker’s Bakery & Café tagline that says, “You’ll Love Our Buns” gets two different reactions. Some laugh and some roll their eyes. We laughed.

At any rate, it’s the perfect introduction to a bakery. They put their money where they hope your mouth is—on the delicious homemade breads and buns.

Located in Custer, South Dakota, the Café is the perfect example of small town dining. It’s a little old-fashioned, very affordable, and serves delicious meals—either with or on their homemade bread.

Diners enjoy breakfast in the front dining room.

Breakfast was Super Good...and Filling

The Café serves both breakfast and lunch. Before hitting the road to Mount Rushmore, we stopped in for breakfast.

Deciding what to eat was no easy task because the menu offerings all sounded delicious. We opted for the Breakfast Burrito and boy, was it ever good! The biscuits and gravy also met this southern gal’s approval. (See the Menu HERE.)

A few years ago, Rachel Ray featured the Café in her magazine. She voted Baker’s Bakery & Café the #1 Best Breakfast in South Dakota. We agree with Rachel. It’s definitely worth the stop.

The Breakfast Burrito will fill you up for the day. Anything covered with green chilies makes my belly happy.

I always try the biscuit and gravy at any cafe.

Giant cinnamon rolls and a nice variety of donuts fill the glass case in the front dining room.

Big Box of Pastries for the Road

Glass cases filled with all kinds of homemade pastries greeted us inside the front door. At least that’s where our eyes went first, taking note of every sugary bread and bar smothered in icing.

The waitress led us to the back dining room where we had breakfast, then—my daughter surprised me. She had them pack a box of pastries for the road. Except for one or two items, they packed one of each item in the case.

We enjoyed the variety and that BIG box that didn’t last long.

Muffins, turnovers, bars, and breads, oh my! I think we had one of everything in our box.

Cafe Much Bigger than it Looks

Baker’s Bakery and Café looked small from the outside but its size surprised us. This full service café has are three separate dining rooms with capacity for 100 guests.

While the exterior may have eye-catching hot pink, the interior has warm earth tones of gold, rust, and brown. The dining room was spacious and our service was fabulous.

Definitely a Worthy Detour

Finding great food when traveling can be tricky. You rely on reviews of others who have been there to help make a decision.

The clerk at our hotel recommended the Café. Online reviews said the food was good. Their sign said we would love their buns.

Did we? Yes. A stop at Baker’s for breakfast is definitely worth the detour. And pastries to go—they were just what we needed.

About the Cafe Location's Mark in History

Sign over the entrance.

In the early years, Custer had its share of infamous outlaws. Have you ever heard of Fly Speck Billy?  We hadn’t either.

However, thanks to the sign over the Café’s front door, we had a short history lesson while waiting for our table.

The sign gives a brief synopsis of the 1881 Abe Barnes murder by Billy (whose real name was James Fowler). The saloon that was once located where the Cafe now stands.

If you’re a big Wild West fan, read the full story HERE. Then, you’ll find out why they called him “Fly Speck Billy.”

  • Just not breakfasts but lunches as well! Try to eat there as much as possible since we live in Custer! Definitely a place to have great food but also a friendly place to meet people from all over!

    • Hello, Joseph,

You are fortunate to have such a great place to eat. My daughter and I both want to return with more family. Lunch at Baker’s will be on the itinerary. We were actually very impressed with all the “locals” we met in Custer. They were all so kind, friendly, and very helpful.

      Thanks for the comment!
