Cool Places to EAT Off the Beaten Path
Finding good places to eat when traveling off the beaten path can be a challenge. So many options!! To make searching a little more simple, we are breaking places to eat into three categories—restaurants, cafes & diners, and sweet shoppes. Ok, maybe two places to eat and one for dessert!
Eating out when at home is enjoyable. But when on the road, it’s a necessity. Opting for hotel-room service isn’t as much fun as trying new restaurants. We have visited many fabulous food joints, so check out where we have eaten.
Restaurants
- Place where meals are cooked and served on premises
- Varies greatly in appearance and offerings
- Wide range of food to choose from
- Generally offers appetizers, entrees, salads, soups, and desserts
- May serve all major meals, single meal, or two meals only
- Meals ordered at table and served by waiter
- Dishes cleared by wait staff
- Payment made after the meal
- Primary seating indoors in small groups

Cafes & Diners
- Two of the most common types of restaurants
- Generally serve light meals, sandwiches, snacks, and drinks
- Casual atmosphere for dining
- Often ordered from a counter and patron takes to the table
- Customer clears dishes from table
- Payment made prior to receiving food
- Frequently have an outdoor eating area
- Provides patrons a place to talk, read, pass time, or gather in small groups
Sweet Shoppes
- Stores filled with delicacies made with sweet ingredients
- Generally have specialty items not found in restaurants, cafes, or grocery store
- Larger assortment than offered at grocery or convenience stores
- May offer old-fashioned treats from different countries
- Often made from homemade or proprietary recipes
- Decor known for warm, nostalgic feel and vintage charm
- Usually ordered from a counter and paid for in advance
- Sometimes have indoor seating available
