From the Mason-Dixon line to the southernmost point of the continent, the Coastal South has much to explore. This area, along with the Deep South, is known for southern hospitality and its welcoming atmosphere.
The region is rich with Colonial and Civil War history. It includes includes the nation's oldest continuously occupied city, St. Augustine, Florida. The first lasting British settlement located in Jamestown, Virginia is also located here.
You can see and feel the cultural influence from Native American to Spanish to English and French. It is here that country and bluegrass music were born. Both were influenced by cultures found in and surrounding the Appalachian Mountains.
The Coastal South is not the largest region, but it is the most populated. This very diverse area has huge megacities, fast-growing cities, small towns, and extensive rural sections. There is much to explore.

TERRAIN: Upper region states have beautiful mountains, rolling hills, river valleys, and scenic plateaus. Lower areas of the region have forested areas, wetlands, and swamps throughout the flat terrain. All have miles and miles of sandy beaches along their coastlines.
CLIMATE: Winter is generally mild with little or no snowfall, but subfreezing temperatures are common in the upper part of the region. Summer heat and humidity can be extreme. Spring and fall is the most pleasant time to explore this area of the country. Plan for a diverse wardrobe when you explore the Coastal South.
