Hotel on Phillips was on My Bucket List

Our stop in Sioux Falls, South Dakota was the last leg of our mother-daughter-granddaughter trip. Having previously researched Sioux Falls for a different trip, the Hotel on Phillips was already on my bucket list.

So, when she asked if I had any idea where to stay, I jumped!! Adaptive reuse of historic buildings is important to me—and this 100-year old bank-office building had been reborn as an elegant boutique hotel.

As it turned out, the Hotel on Phillips was one of the best places we stayed on the trip. We were “wowed” the minute we entered the lobby.

Our first view inside the lobby side entrance was a mix of both historic and modern design.

Enter and be Wowed

As an interior designer, I begin looking at floors, walls, ceilings, and structural details when I enter a room. This comes from curiosity on how the design was put together. (Tom has gotten used to it—I even do this in elevators!)

When I entered the lobby, it felt like stepping back in time—but at the same time, it didn't. I was immediately wowed and started taking in a mix of both historic and modern design.

From the tufted blue velvet sofa and mirrored table to the marble floor and fluted columns, the room bespoke elegance.

Not Your Run-of-the-Mill Lobby

The hotel lobby is not your typical lobby. It's anything but average with marble floors, ornamented ceilings, rich old wood, and fluted columns.

The renovation retained key historic features, including the original chandeliers, however, it added modern flair.

Combine the two and you have a room exuding style with grace. Even the furnishings are a combination of contemporary with a touch of history.

Stylized "wing back" chairs allude to history without being antique.

Enter "The Treasury" lounge through the original bank vault.

When is a Bank Vault Not a Vault?

Another “wow” at the Hotel on Phillips is the original bank vault. It is a focal point of the lobby and now serves as entrance to “The Treasury,” the on-site lounge. How often do you get to walk through a bank vault?

The massive 16-ton vault door with 24 3-inch bolts is the first thing you notice when looking to the left from the side entrance.

From the main entrance, the vault is straight ahead. From either view, it’s definitely an impressive reminder of the building’s history.

Hotel on Phillips a Sweet Find

Sometimes when traveling we stumble into a sweet place to stay, however why leave it to chance. Yes, research pays off as it did with finding the Hotel on Phillips. It was the perfect last stop for our trip.

The Hotel was not only a great introduction to a beautiful downtown, it wowed us from the moment we entered the lobby. This upscale, classy hotel is THE place to stay. Do not underestimate what Sioux Falls has to offer.

About the Hotel on Phillips

Originally built in 1918 as the Sioux Falls National Bank, the building has a long history. It has housed bank, law, and other corporate offices in the 9-story structure over its 100-year history.

Purchased in 2018, renamed to the Hotel on Phillips and restored, it now houses an upscale, boutique style place for travelers to stay. Locally owned and operated, the historic structure has 90 elegant rooms and luxury suites.

Upscale, but at an affordable price, hotel guests can enjoy either downtown river views. The Hotel is located 5-minutes from shops and eateries, 1-mile from Falls Park, and a short 2-miles to the interstate.
