The Old Place Offers Relaxing Country Living

Looking to get away from the city and enjoy some quiet time? Why not take a trip to Amory, Mississippi? Guests find spending a few days at The Old Place Bed and Breakfast relaxes even the tightest of minds.

Located near Mississippi’s eastern border, Amory is fairly easy to reach. We found a delightful little town with lots of southern hospitality plus a memorable place to relax.

Oh, just so you know—when you get to Amory, locals pronounce it “AIM-or-ee.” Now, on to our visit at The Old Place.

Family Home Meant Family Time

Built in 1925, the house was the Glenn family home for decades. Now Jimmy Glenn, grandson of the original owners, and his wife, Theresa, own the home. (Theresa is the innkeeper and the sweetest of southern gals!)

Building the house in the old days was a family project. Jimmy’s grandfather and other relatives, who incidentally lived on the same street, lent a hand. The house is an American Craftsman Bungalow, typical style of the period, ordered from Sears!

The king bedroom, filled with antiques, has a unique brick fireplace built by the owner's uncles.

While we were in the living room, Theresa told us a bit about neighborhood life back then.

She said, “Of course, back in the 20’s and 30’s, the families up and down this road were all just about related to each other, kin folks. On Saturday night they would have dances and there was an old pipe pedal organ over here.”

Family Home Becomes a Bed & Breakfast

Except for storing family items, the house sat vacant for a number of years after the original owners died. It was in 2000 Jimmy and Theresa decided to turn the house into a bed and breakfast.

Over the years, the house was affectionately called “The Old Place.” It seemed the perfect fit for the new B&B’s name.

Renovation of the family home was extensive for plumbing, electrical, and wall surfaces. Guest baths were added and updated with workable vintage fixtures. Original woodwork, brickwork, windows and doors remained, keeping the craftsman feel.

Jimmy's aunt, who lived nearby, enjoyed the process. Theresa said, "She was so thrilled that we got to do that and she got to be in on it a little bit. She would tell me some stories and there’s a write up about that on the wall in there." Guests can find the write up in the hallway filled with family items.

Full kitchen is available for guest use. Of note--the sink is original, with a new countertop added. Also, the owner had the table made from an old church pew.

Guests Find Life as it was in the 1925-40’s

A stay at The Old Place Bed & Breakfast feels like staying the night at your grandmother’s house. The house is set back from the road, surrounded by green fields. A couple of fenced off fields hold sheep, horses, donkeys, and Great Pyrenees dogs

The sun room once served as the family kitchen dining area (because the formal dining room was only used for special occasions).

The scent of time greets you. From the wood floors to brick fireplaces to original wavy glass in the windows, you can feel what life was like nearly 100 years ago.

Guests find cozy rooms filled with antiques that are not only usable, but comfortable.

A covered outdoor sitting area near the kitchen invites guests to relax. The round concrete "table" is actually the old well. Be sure to notice the pulley used for drawing water. It's on the ceiling above the well.

Breakfast is continental style and at your convenience. Also, guests find water and juices in the fridge plus fruit for snacks.

However, the farmhouse kitchen is available for your use—if you want to cook like grandma did. Great option for those staying more than one night.

The “back porch” was one of our favorite areas. You can just feel the family sitting around, visiting with one another.

Not only is the sitting area covered, surrounding shrubs provide protection from the elements.

Why go to Amory?

Amory is a little off the beaten path so why would you go there? We found 5 really good reasons:

  • Near Tupelo - If you’re an Elvis Presley fan, a visit to his birthplace home is a must.
  • The Natchez Trace - It goes through Tupelo which is a short drive to The Old Place.
  • Pastoral Setting - Relaxation is easy when surrounded by green fields and sounds of nature
  • Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway - Called the “Tenn-Tom” for short, guests find lots of outdoor activities here.
  • Amory Regional Museum - Visit the museum to learn about key pieces of local history, including the railroad’s influence.

Feel the Memories

Our stay at The Old Place reminded me of going to my grandparents’ house. Though built a few years before, it was similar style—and also built by my grandfather and family members.

So, if you want a trip down memory lane—or find out what country life was like nearly 100 years ago, take a trip to Amory and stay at The Old Place. You will be glad you did. We sure were.

About the Owners

Jimmy Glenn is a lifelong resident of Amory and retired apparel business owner. His wife Theresa, originally from Corinth, Mississippi manages their bed & breakfast business.

We didn’t get a chance to meet Jimmy but Theresa is a gem. You can see the former art teacher’s artistic flair throughout the house.

The Old Place is also available for events such as parties, showers, and teas as well as overnight stays.

**Thank you to Theresa for the interview and allowing us to photograph your B&B for our Worthy Detours Travel Blog. Also, thank you for your kindness in providing our overnight stay!
